About the Course
The shoulder is a complex and highly mobile joint, and its proper function is essential for accomplishing a wide range of activities of daily living. Unfortunately, after a burn injury, scar contracture can cause pain, stiffness and reduced range of motion. In addition, severe scar contracture and the accumulated effect of immobilization, compensatory movements or posture caused by pain can pull the shoulder joint out of its normal position, resulting in more permanent deformity and further limiting shoulder mobility. Understanding how to evaluate the burned shoulder to correctly identify problems and their cause, as well as select targeted interventions to achieve the best outcome possible is crucial when dealing with upper extremity burns.
This course will present methods to evaluate the burned shoulder, as well as discuss the various rehabilitation interventions (exercises, positioning, pressure therapy, ADL training, etc.), to allow therapists to evaluate and treat shoulder problems after burns more accurately.
Course objectives
After this training, the participant will be able to:
Explain the methods for evaluating the shoulder to identify abnormal scapulo-humeral rhythm.
Explain the principle intervention methods to address post-burn shoulder issues, including posture correction, tissue softening, muscle strengthening, pressure therapy, ADL training, etc.
Course content
Clinical presentation of post-burn abnormal scapulo-humeral rhythm and evaluation methods.
Rehabilitation interventions to deal with post-burn abnormal scapulo-humeral rhythm.
Pressure therapy consideration for the burned shoulder.
ADL Functional Training and Use of Assistive Devices for Shoulders Post-Burns.
Evaluation
The following evaluations will be done:
Pre-test to assess the level of basic knowledge of the participants.
Mini quiz after each lesson to review the key points of the lesson.
Post-test to evaluate the improvement of the knowledge of the participants.
Approval criteria:
Completion of all course elements within the allotted time period.
Post-test score of 80% and above.
