About the Course
Compartment syndrome is a potentially life-threatening condition characterized by increased pressure within fascial compartments, often resulting from trauma such as fractures or burns. For burn therapists, understanding compartment syndrome is critical, as delayed diagnosis or treatment can lead to permanent damage, including Volkmann's ischemic contracture. This course provides a comprehensive introduction to compartment syndrome, focusing on acute forearm compartment syndrome, a rare but severe condition that requires prompt intervention. Participants will gain insights into its pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management, and learn how rehabilitation professionals play a key role in mitigating long-term complications.
Course objectives
Explain what is compartment syndrome and its cause.
Recognize the symptoms and clinical signs of compartment syndrome, with an emphasis on the "6 Ps."
Identify how compartment syndrome affects structures of the forearm (nerves and muscles).
Understand the progression, treatment options, and potential complications of acute forearm compartment syndrome.
Identify Volkmanns contracture and other complications of compartment syndrome in order to develop rehabilitation strategies.
Course content
Introduction to fascial compartments and compartment syndrome.
Etiology and pathophysiology of acute compartment syndrome.
Diagnosis and initial management of acute compartment syndrome.
Presentation of Volkmanns ischemic contracture, a serious complication of forearm compartment syndrome.
Patients case of Volkmanns ischemic contracture.
Evaluation
The following evaluations will be done:
Pre-test to assess the level of basic knowledge of the participants.
Mini quiz after each lesson to review the key points of the lesson.
Post-test to evaluate the improvement of the knowledge of the participants.
